Im Mittelpunkt der Publikation steht der Aufenthalt des jungen Expressionisten im Haus Rosengarten am Thunersee vom Oktober 1913 bis Juni 1914. Hier entwickelte August Macke (18871914) seine ganz eigene Malweise, wie der Band anhand zahlreicher Skizzen in unterschiedlichsten Zeichentechniken, Studien sowie lgemlden demonstriert. Auerdem
August Mackes Gesamtwerk zählt zu den herausragenden Leistungen der frühen Moderne in der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im Mittelpunkt der Publikation steht der Aufenthalt des jungen Expressionisten im Haus Rosengarten am Thunersee vom Oktober 1913 bis Juni 1914. Hier entwickelte August Macke (1887–1914) seine ganz eigene Malweise, wie der Band anhand zahlreicher Skizzen in unterschiedlichsten Zeichentechniken, Studien sowie Ölgemälden demonstriert.Außerdem wird erstmals Mackes besondere Beziehung zur Schweiz beleuchtet.
Kleinere Exkurse bilden die Tunisreise von August Macke, Paul Klee und Louis Moilliet im April 1914, die gemeinsam am Thunersee geplant und von dort aus unternommen wurde, sowie der künstlerischer Einfluss von Macke auf den Künstlerfreund Louis Moilliet. Desweiteren wird die Thuner Landschaft als Topos der Moderne thematisiert.
