1986, nachdem Rallyes der Gruppe B aus dem FIA-Reglement gestrichen worden waren, nutzte Peugeot einen Großteil seiner Erfahrung bei der Entwicklung des 205 T16 für die Rallye Paris-Dakar und den Pikes Peak Hillclimb. Ihr erster Versuch am Pikes Peak, auch bekannt als The Race to the Clouds, war 1987 mit dem winzigen 205: dem Auto, das nach seiner Einführung im Jahr 1983 das kommerzielle Vermögen von Peugeot veränderte und dann zu einer Legende auf der weltweiten Rallye-Bühne wurde dank der ausgefallenen T16-Version der Gruppe B. Am Pikes Peak kämpfte der tapfere Peugeot von Ari Vatanen tapfer gegen Audi, aber ihr Sport quattro gewann die Veranstaltung.
