Dank intensiver Ausgrabungen seit den 1930er Jahren zählt der Flusshafen der Colonia Ulpia Traiana im heutigen Xanten zu den am besten untersuchten Anlagen seiner Art im Römischen Reich. Die geologisch günstigen Bedingungen führten zu einer außergewöhnlich guten Erhaltung der Kaianlage und anderer hölzerner Bauten in Ufernähe. Parallel zur Vorlage der feinkeramischen Funde durch R.
