Das RD-RX820 ist kompatibel mit den 12-fach-Kassetten 11-34Z und 11-36Z und bietet so einen großen Übersetzungsbereich, mit dem in jedem Gelände eine angenehme Trittfrequenz gefahren werden kann. Das SHIMANO GRX 12-fach-Schaltwerk verfügt außerdem über einen integrierten Kettenstabilisator, der für leisere Schaltvorgänge und ein sichereres Kettenmanagement sorgt, wenn es ruppiger wird. Der Kettenspanner verfügt über einen ON/OFF-Schalter für Ausfahrten auf glattem Untergrund.
