Evaporating Suns erkundet Mythen aus der Region des Arabischen Golfs entlang von 13 künstlerischen Positionen. Grundlegend ist dabei die Überzeugung, dass sich das Mythische und das Faktische zueinander verhalten wie zwei Seiten einer Medaille: Mythen erzählen keine bloße Fiktion, vielmehr sind sie in der Lage, eine Wahrheit viel eindringlicher vor Augen zu führen, als trockene Fakten es jemals könnten. Im Zentrum der Publikation stehen dabei die Arbeiten von zeitgenössischen Künstler*innen, komplementiert durch Essays von Autor*innen ebenfalls aus der Golfregion, die sich mit der Folklore und den populären Mythen ihrer Heimat beschäftigt haben. Indem sie mit Zynismus, Satire und Fiktion ihre eigenen Universen schaffen und die Geschichte ihrer Gesellschaften neu schreiben, begreifen sie Mythen als Möglichkeit, einen neuen Zugang zu aktuellen Themen wie Umwelt, Genderpolitik und gesellschaftlichen Machtstrukturen zu eröffnen.

Die 2018 von der Künstlerin Sibylle Piermattei-Geiger und ihrem Mann Rocco Piermattei gegründete KULTURSTIFTUNG BASEL H. GEIGER I KBH.G schafft in den Basler Ausstellungsräumen ein Kulturangebot mit aktuellen politischen oder kulturellen Bezügen. Drei Kunst- und Themenausstellungen jährlich bieten Freiraum für Konzepte außerhalb der etablierten Institutionen.

Attempting to Unravel Complex Ideas
Format: Paperback
Christian theology is interesting in that it is both readily accessible, and multi-layered (and quite complex). As a Christian, I can see the way Christ's teaching was designed to be understandable to all, in all walks of life and all educational backgrounds. That's a big part of why it is so profoundly moving and effective. However, the atonement is a surprisingly deep subject when we as more mature Christians (or at least more educated ones) try to delve into how exactly Christ's sacrifice on the cross worked. I am not an expert by any means, but I found this book deep and enriching in the ideas it presents. I have yet to fully grasp them or figure out how I feel about a few of them. But such is the way of studying the atonement - Christian theologians have been considering it for two millennia. The writing style is accessible enough, I was able to follow it without an issue. I consider this book more of a jumping-off point for further study than a conclusive explanation of all the facets of the atonement as we (try to) understand them.
